I founded Sankofa Learning Place on a simple idea borrowed from the Akan people of West Africa: it is never wrong to go back and reclaim what was left behind. In education, that means meeting every teacher, student, and school exactly where they are - not where a generic program assumes they should be.
With more than six years serving educators and families across Brooklyn, I’ve built Sankofa around three communities — classroom educators, families, and school systems — because real, lasting change in education happens when all three are supported at once.

This Akan proverb is where our name - and our whole approach - comes from. Sankofa is often pictured as a bird reaching back for an egg on its back: moving forward while still gathering what's needed from behind. That's exactly how we work with every student, teacher, and school we serve.
